Creating pathways to free speech.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit human rights organization founded in 1920. The organization strives to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed in the United States. As Creative Director with Fufu + Grits, we were tasked with creating a localized ad campaign and toolkit for the Greater Washington D.C. Area that built public pressure to end The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s advertising policies that violated rights to free speech.

As we worked towards the campaign's goals, our focus was on crafting a dynamic visual narrative aimed at "creating a pathway to free speech” across the DMV Area. Our challenge lied in striking a harmonious balance, blending familiarity with uniqueness. We fostered a narrative advocating against censorship. Ultimately we leveraged the transit system to create visual motifs. These motifs allowed us to convey digestible narratives that shed light on policies.
